Boyalife: Always Be a Practitioner of Public Responsibility

Environmental protection, ecological construction, energy conservation and emissions reduction have become the inevitable issues for future economic and social development, with the global economy advancing by leaps and bounds. On December 19, 2017, at a meeting in Beijing, Boyalife Group, together with more than 100 private enterprises, including Geely Group, Hongdou Group, Bosideng and Chaowei Group, advocated environmental protection by drafting “A Proposal on Environmental Protection by a Consortium of Chinese Entrepreneurs.” The nationwide consortium of influential enterprises became the practitioners and contributors of global ecological conservation by participating in and launching these environmental governance standards and insisting on green development.

Boyalife has been actively involved in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives for many years. Besides creating value, it has been focused on undertaking social responsibility for industries, consumers, workers, the environment, communities and other interested parties, promoting social governance and advancing public welfare to boost social progress.

Boost medical development with industrial influence

As a leading player in the clinical research and application of stem cells, Boyalife has achieved many breakthroughs in progeria, thalassemia and other genetic diseases by leveraging its powerful R&D organization to boost medical development.

Hutchinson-Gilford Syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. Patients suffering from this debilitating disease will age 5-10 times faster than a healthy individual, accelerating the decline of organs and rapidly reducing physiological function. Average life expectancy is just 7-20 years old. In 2016, Boyalife collaborated with Peking University Third Hospital to develop a treatment for Hutchinson-Gilford Syndrome. The collaboration was a success; after systematic investigation, analysis and evaluation, the first case of Hutchinson-Gilford Syndrome was successfully treated through placental stem cell transplantation. This new application of stem cell technology represents a significant breakthrough in the field.

The genetic disease thalassemia, which is highly prevalent in the Guangdong and Guangxi provinces of China, requires patients to undergo near-continuous blood transfusions, and cannot be treated without transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells. In July 2016, a team led by SUN Xiaofang, professor at the Third Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, corrected a mutation of the β-Mediterranean gene through advanced gene editing technology. The team was able to split normal candidate stem cells, allowing thalassemia patients to achieve autotransplantation of hematopoietic stem cells. Boyalife established the National Thalassemia Comprehensive Treatment Platform together with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Peking University, Fudan University, Tongji University and Zhejiang University. Boyalife also collaborated with WU Jieping Medical Foundation to create China’s first stem cell clinical application research fund to finance clinical research of stem cell treatments for thalassemia spanning “the last wall” from the lab to the operating table.

At the 10th annual meeting of the Chinese Association for Life Care, Boyalife established the Special Fund for Life Care, which is dedicated to transforming medicine, science and technological achievement. The fund is intended to support clinical research and its application in genetic diagnosis, cell treatment and other specific fields to  improve patient quality of life.

Pay attention to social welfare in action

Over the years, Boyalife has been actively fulfilling its corporate public responsibility in the field of medicine and  has spared no effort in developing a biological sample gene pool. The company has also worked tirelessly to conserve biodiversity, protect the environment of Taihu Lake, and to save energy and reduce consumption in the field of social welfare.

Today’s species disappear 1,000-10,000 faster than at any point in history. If the current trend remains unchanged,  0.01%-0.1% of all species will become extinct each year. According to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which was ratified by 109 countries, each country and each region has committed to build a biological sample gene pool to save species that become endangered or extinct. BOYALIFE GENOMICS LTD, a subsidiary of Boyalife Group, is building a biological sample gene bank to protect cultivated species of crop and endangered species. The company is also developing a global gene pool network. In 2013, BOYALIFE GENOMICS LTD successfully cloned and restored the Korean coyote, which became extinct in 2008, by applying the world’s leading inter-species cloning technology using a dog as a surrogate. This same technology can be applied to other species, and even ancient species that became extinct long ago.

Boyalife possesses great ambition without forgetting the smaller things. In 2012 (as noted above), the company launched the “Boyalife Protects Taihu Lake” initiative. At Boyalife, the concepts of energy conservation and reduced carbon emissions strike at the hearts of people. The company seeks to protect the environment in all aspects of its operation, including implementation of a paperless office system, garbage recycling, more efficient use of air-conditioning and reduced of long-distance travel.

Today, enterprises need to consider the environment and their impact on society more than at any previous time. An enterprise with a sense of responsibility focuses not only on commercial profit, but how to contribute positively to society. “Our mission is to improve human health but we will always be concerned with how our innovations intersect with corporate social responsibility,” said Dr. Xiaochun Xu, president of Boyalife, “ We have devoted ourselves to improving public welfare while benefiting society, and we support China’s life and health industry in compliance with the spirit of being diligent, rigorous, and creative. We adhere to the philosophy that industries exist to serve the country and to contribute to the society.”
